Who is Mark Muffley? Explosive Found In Checked Luggage At Pennsylvania Airport, 40-year-old Man Arrested

Officials said this week that a Pennsylvania man was apprehended at an airport while attempting to sneak a bomb into his luggage for a flight to Florida. Mark Muffley, 40, was scheduled to board an Allegiant Air flight to Orlando from Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania on Monday when the explosive device was discovered in his checked bag, according to WPVI-TV.

According to the complaint filed against Muffley, the small device triggered an alarm while being screened by the TSA. When agents searched the bag, they discovered a device about 3 inches in diameter inside the lining. It contained a powder and two fuses wrapped in wax paper and plastic wrap.

Muffley was then paged over the public address system at the airport, prompting him to flee. Later that night, he was arrested at his home, according to WPVI. According to a criminal complaint, the powder found in the small bomb is thought to be a combination of flash powder and dark granular, both of which are commonly used in commercial-grade fireworks.

According to the complaint: “The baggage also contained a can of butane, a lighter, a pipe with white powder residue, a wireless drill with cordless batteries, and two GFCI outlets taped together with black tape,”

Arrested And Charges

According to an airport spokesman, the device was discovered shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday on the west side of the main terminal, which was then shut down. Around 2 p.m., the device was removed and the terminal reopened.

Muffley was being held in FBI custody on Wednesday, accused of having an explosive in an airport and attempting to place an explosive on an aircraft.
