Who was Jerry Richardson?

Jerome Johnson Richardson Sr. was a businessman, football player, and NFL owner from the United States (NFL). He founded and owned the Carolina Panthers franchise from 1995 to 2018. When the Carolina Panthers were unanimously awarded the NFL’s 29th franchise on October 26, 1993, Richardson became the first former NFL player to become an owner since George Halas. The Panthers would represent and benefit the entire region, not just Charlotte and North Carolina.

Richardson owned the Panthers from its inception in 1993 until 2018 when Tepper paid more than $2.2 billion for the team. Richardson announced in December 2017 that he was selling the Panthers following an investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct against him.

Damning allegations against Richardson were uncovered further in a shocking Sports Illustrated report, which stated that the alleged behavior included sexually suggestive language and conduct. Following the investigation, the NFL fined Richardson $2.75 million. Tepper eventually paid $2.2 billion to the Panthers in 2018.
